From the psychological point of view, motivation can either come from within the person (intrinsic motivation), or be driven by external factors (extrinsic motivation). Extrinsic motivation can work quite well, but its appeal usually wears off after some time, or when you run out of rewards to collect. Intrinsic motivation is much more powerful and lasting. It fuels people to pursue their goals over a number of years, if not their entire lifespans.
